• THE GRAN SASSO NATIONAL LABORATORIES

The Gran Sasso National Laboratories, the biggest underground laboratories in the world, can be found under the Gran Sasso mountain, along the motorway gallery that connects the cities of Teramo and L'Aquila, which rises up to more than 1,400 metres of pure stone. Constructed upon the initiative of the physicist Antonio Zichichi, the Laboratories play host to a varied number of experiments (approx. 15, currently) and involve nearly 650 researchers who come from all over the world, as well as permanent staff who make up some 70 people, among whom are: research workers, technicians and administrative personnel.

The mountain protects the experiments from cosmic radiation, made up of particles originating both within and outside our galaxy and which continually bombard the Earth, creating disturbance in the study of extremely rare phenomena as well as of neutrinos, particles made up of certain properties that are not yet fully understood.
